چکیده

Medieval pavements composed of lead-glazed tiles decorated with a variety techniques continue to inspire questions about the organisation glaze manufacture, and supply origin lead materials. The analysed in this study are from Suscinio I (a 13th-century pavement) II 14th-century pavement), at Château Brittany, also pavement fortified manor house Brain-sur-Allonnes, Anjou. Lead isotope analysis (LIA) was used examine samples 44 tiles, 29 which transparent, while 15 tin-opacified (an exogenous technique these regions during period). Five out six LIA groups thus identified favour site-specific networks, results for remaining group, LIA5, indicate multi-site network. After combining archaeological historical data, most likely provenance materials LIA5 is Derbyshire, British Isles. Both importation ready-to-use glazing mixtures use neighbouring mines can now therefore be discounted as plausible hypotheses production lead-glaze study.

Cannabis Smoking in 13th-14th Century Ethiopia: Chemical Evidence

Two ceramic smoking-pipe bowls, excavated in Lalibela Cave, Begemeder Province, Ethiopia, were radiocarbon dated to 1320 ±2 80 A.D. A modified thin-layer chromatographic technique, applied to the pipe residues, yields positive tests for cannabis-derived compounds. Long-lived cannabinoids, produced by the heat of smoking from short-lived psychoactive ingredients in cannabis, makes identification...

Stable Isotope Evidence for Late Medieval (14th–15th C) Origins of the Eastern Baltic Cod (Gadus morhua) Fishery

Although recent historical ecology studies have extended quantitative knowledge of eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) exploitation back as far as the 16th century, the historical origin of the modern fishery remains obscure. Widespread archaeological evidence for cod consumption around the eastern Baltic littoral emerges around the 13th century, three centuries before systematic documentation, b...

Pre-Columbian treponemal disease from 14th century AD Safed, Israel, and implications for the medieval eastern Mediterranean.

It is only recently that these skulls have been studied for evidence of disease. One adult individual demonstrates multiple lesions of the cranial vault, compatible with treponematosis. Radiocarbon dating suggests the year of death to be between 1290-1420 AD. This rang...

The Logic of Where and While in the 13th and 14th Centuries

Medieval analyses of molecular propositions include many non-truthfunctional connectives in addition to the standard modern binary connectives (conjunction, disjunction, and conditional). Two types of non-truthfunctional molecular propositions considered by a number of 13thand 14th-century authors are temporal and local propositions, which combine atomic propositions with ‘while’ and ‘where’. D...
